Bob Hanley is currently the Vice President for Cyber and Engineering solutions at Sabre Systems, a leading technology provider for DoD, Federal and Commercial customers. He was formerly the Director of the Department of the Navy’s (DoN) airworthiness Office, located at Patuxent River, MD. He oversaw the flight safety and certification of all of the Navy and Marine Corp’s 4,000 plus manned and unmanned aircraft to include the Presidential Helicopter, the Blue Angel’s Flight Demonstration Team and all of the combat and non-combat aircraft flown by the DoN. Mr. Hanley served in this position until 2017. Bob was the Head of the Navy’s Flight Dynamics Branch from 1995 to 2001 where he was the DoN expert on Stability and Control and Flying Qualities. From 1991 to 1995, Bob was the Senior Aerodynamics Engineer for Tactical Aircraft in the Flight Dynamics Branch. Prior to coming to this position, Bob was the South east/west Asian Action Officer in the Navy’s International Program Office from 1990 to 1991 where he oversaw Foreign Sales of DoN equipment, aircraft, submarines and ships to countries such as Pakistan, India and Egypt as well as being responsible for providing humanitarian support and relief under Presidential Order to countries, such as Bangladesh, following major catastrophic events. From 1983 until 1990, Mr. Hanley worked the Blue Angel program and numerous new developments such as the Advanced Tactical Aircraft, Navy Advanced Tactical Fighter and the predecessor to the Joint Strike Fighter. Bob began his career with the Navy in 1979 working with logistics and support equipment.
Some of the awards that Mr. Hanley has received in his career include the Department of Defense (DoD) Distinguished Civilian Service Award which is the highest civilian award given by the Department of Defense; the DoD Exceptional Civilian Service Award; the Secretary of Defense Freedom Award; the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award, the T. Michael Fish Award for excellence in leadership in the Navy; the Under Secretary of Defense Acquisition Innovation Award, and the Heinemann Aerospace Achievement Award. He is also a member of the Virginia Tech Academy of Excellence for the College of Engineering as well as the Aerospace and Ocean Engineering Department.
Bob is the Chairman of the Aerospace and Ocean Engineering Advisory Board. He also serves on the Board of Directors, Association of Airworthiness Professionals, the College of Southern Maryland Cyber Council, and the Temple University Cyber Council. He currently Chairs the Joint Academia, Industry and Government (JAIG) Cyber, Engineering and Software Focus Group (that includes 40+ colleges/universities and Army, Navy and USAF as well as 30+ industry partners) and is the Chairman, SMART (Strengthening the Mid-Atlantic Region for Tomorrow) Cyber Committee. Bob is the Secretary, for the Southern Maryland Chapter of AFCEA International. Bob was the former Navy and Marine Corps Director of Airworthiness and CYBERSAFE at Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) (2000-2017), the former Chairman, National Airworthiness Council (Army/Navy/USAF/FAA/USCG members) (2002-2017) and the former NAVAIR Leader for Task Force Cyber Awakening (2014-2017).
