Timothy S. Mierzwicki

Tim Mierzwicki is the Director of the Ship Concepts and Future Force Architecture Division (05D1) of the Surface Ship Design and Systems Engineering Group at Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA),   Washington, DC.  Tim earned both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Ocean Engineering from Virginia Tech (’99 and ’03).  Tim began his career, training in the shipbuilding industry as a naval architect and hydodynamacist at General Dynamics Electric Boat where he supported detail design and construction of Sea Wolf and Virginia Class Submarines.  He then joined Ingalls Shipbuilding and enjoyed positions of increasing levels of responsibility over 10 years in Pascagoula, MS and Washington, DC rising from associate to senior naval architect and systems engineer III/IV.  There he led projects for the hull technical/waterfront and advanced capabilities groups that focused on concept development, preliminary & contract level design, detail design, waterfront evolutions (launch and incline), and systems testing & sea trials.  While at Ingalls/NGSS Tim was instrumental in research, development, T&E, and engineering efforts that directly supported the design-to-build, build-to-test and delivery of DDG1000, DDG51 FLIGHT IIA destroyers (DDG 80 AF), LHD 7, LHD 8, and the Legend Class National Security Cutter. 

In 2009 Tim accepted a senior naval architect position at the U.S. Navy’s Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division in Bethesda, Maryland.  At the “rock” he supported NAVSEA as a Design Integration Manager for the Command Ship Replacement Program and as Deputy Ship Design Manager for LHA-7.     In 2011, Tim accepted a Ship Concept Manager position at NAVSEA Headquarters.  In this role he was recognized with the Commander’s Award for Innovation for leading a team of naval engineers in the development of multiple feasible ship concept designs for the LX(R) Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) which led to the Navy/Marine Core decision to authorize a new LPD Flight II Class of Amphibious Assault Ships.  Tim’s became the LPD Deputy Ship Design Manger for the Flight II preliminary design in 2013.  In 2015 Tim was selected to be the NAVSEA05 Ship Design Manger and Technical Warrant Holder for Advanced Surface Ship Concepts. This position is responsible for ensuring that surface ship concepts meet NAVSEA Standards and for maintaining the Navy’s technical pyramid that supports their development inclusive of personnel, tools and standards. Tim became the NAVSEA05D1 division director in 2019. He has served as the Technical Director for T-AGOS(X) AOA, DDG1000 Railgun, and Large Surface Combatant RETs.  These efforts have resulted in continuation of DDG1000 mission payload exploration, and the new T-AGOS(X) and DDG(X) programs.  He has provided oversight to numerous other programs and projects.  Most recently, he has led the Future Surface Combatant Force AOA, which underpins the Navy’s shift towards a future force mix of unmanned and manned surface combatants; and exploration of CVL design space between LHA and CVNs.  He is the Study Director for the ongoing Offensive Surface Fires AoA.   

Tim is a SNAME Fellow, and past Chair of the Chesapeake Section and Naval Ship Design Panel (SD-8).   He lives in Crofton, MD with his wife Dana (his high school crush), and their four children.  He is active in his church and enjoys coaching youth soccer, youth lacrosse and sharing the joy of being outdoors, on boats and in the water with family and friends.
