Bernard Grossman

Dr. Grossman is Professor Emeritus and was formerly Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Virginia Tech for more than 25 years. From 1993 to 2002 he served as the Department Head and was also the founding Director of the Multidisciplinary Analysis and Design Center for Advanced Vehicles. He was one of the early developers in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD where his research involved the development of computational algorithms over all flight regimes from low speed to transonic, supersonic and hypersonic flows. Additionally, he was involved in the early application of CFD in the multidisciplinary design process. He has published in a variety of engineering journals as well as applied mathematics and physics proceedings. Dr. Grossman enjoys teaching and has lectured widely, not only at Virginia Tech, but also elsewhere in the US, Europe and Asia. He is a Fellow in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Prior to coming to Virginia Tech, Dr. Grossman spent 12 years at Grumman Aerospace Corporation, where his last position was the Head of the Theoretical Aerodynamics Laboratory in the Corporate Research Department. The last 10 years of his career before retirement was at the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) in Hampton, VA. At the NIA he was the founding Vice President of Education. After retiring he continued teaching short courses, and an occasional graduate class at the University of Florida. He also regularly teaches an adult education class at the University of North Florida on “Our Technological Future.” He currently spends his time with his wife Sharon in Ponte Vedra, Florida and Beech Mountain, North Carolina.
