A native of southwest Virginia, Edwards graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Virginia Tech in 1987. He worked a number of years with factory automation in Industry for many years before coming to academia.
Edwards has always been intrigued by electronics, aviation and computers and obtained an Amateur Radio license in 1983 and private pilots license in 1995. The aerospace and ocean engineering department combined many of his interests.
According to Steve, the AOE department has always been more than just a place to work. As IT specialist, he enjoys the personal connections with the many people working in different areas. In his role, he finds the research needed to test equipment and procedures intriguing, and. maintaining computational systems for such advanced research rewarding. Working around such a remarkable group of people is one of the best parts of AOE.
Edwards maintains that security and availability of computer systems has been a priority and a challenge, and that constant learning is required in order to keep up with an ever-changing environment. What worked one year needs to be fixed the next. Learning and re-learning has kept the job interesting.
